Liberation Email and Hub for Teams mailboxes use the same mail server and the same login, so these steps work whether your mailbox is on a Hub for Teams plan or a standalone Liberation Email (Email Pro) plan.

Thunderbird's automatic setup won't find the right settings for a Liberation Email/Hub mailbox on its own, so you'll need to switch to manual configuration partway through — this guide shows you where.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • Your full email address (e.g. [email protected])
  • Your mailbox password (your Hub for Teams password, or your Email Pro mailbox password)
  • Thunderbird already installed and open

Tip: If you're not sure your password still works, sign in first at hubforteams.com (Hub plans) or mail.liberation.email (Email Pro plans) to confirm it before setting up Thunderbird.

Add the account in Thunderbird

  1. Open Thunderbird. Go to the menu (three lines, top right) and choose Account Settings, then Account Actions > Add Mail Account… (or, on a fresh install, use the "Set up an existing email account" option on the start screen).
  2. Enter your name, your full email address, and your mailbox password. Click Continue.
  3. Thunderbird will search for settings automatically and will likely get them wrong or fail. Click Configure manually (or Manual config) rather than accepting whatever it finds.
  4. Fill in the manual settings:

    Incoming

    • Protocol: IMAP
    • Server hostname: mail.liberation.email
    • Port: 993
    • Connection security: SSL/TLS
    • Authentication: Normal password
    • Username: your full email address

    Outgoing

    • Server hostname: mail.liberation.email
    • Port: 465
    • Connection security: SSL/TLS
    • Authentication: Normal password
    • Username: your full email address
  5. Click Re-test (or Done). Thunderbird should confirm it can connect on both incoming and outgoing.
  6. If a certificate warning appears, click Done/confirm only if the certificate is issued to mail.liberation.email — if it names a different domain, stop and open a support ticket instead of proceeding.
Incoming server (IMAP) Outgoing server (SMTP)
Port 993 465
Connection security SSL/TLS SSL/TLS

If port 993/465 don't connect (some networks block them), edit the account under Account Settings > Server Settings (and Outgoing Server (SMTP)) and switch to IMAP port 143 and SMTP port 587, both with connection security set to STARTTLS.

Troubleshooting

  • Thunderbird keeps asking for your password: your password was likely changed elsewhere (Hub or webmail). Go to Account Settings > Server Settings and re-enter it, or clear saved passwords under Account Settings > Account Actions > … > Security > Saved Passwords and sign in again.
  • You can receive mail but can't send: check Account Settings > Outgoing Server (SMTP) and confirm the server, port, connection security and username match the table above.
  • Still not working: confirm the password by signing in on the web — Hub plans at hubforteams.com, Email Pro plans at mail.liberation.email. If that also fails, reset your password (see How to log in to Liberation Email / Hub for Teams and reset your password).

Calendar and contacts sync separately from mail and aren't covered by these steps — see How to sync your Hub calendar and contacts to your phone, Outlook or Thunderbird.
