Liberation Email and Hub for Teams mailboxes use the same mail server and the same login, so these steps work whether your mailbox is on a Hub for Teams plan or a standalone Liberation Email (Email Pro) plan.

Outlook 2016's account setup screens are laid out differently from newer versions of Outlook, so this guide walks through the 2016-specific steps. If you're on a newer version of Outlook, see How to set up Liberation Email on your phone or computer (IMAP/SMTP settings) instead.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • Your full email address (e.g. [email protected])
  • Your mailbox password (your Hub for Teams password, or your Email Pro mailbox password)
  • Outlook 2016 already installed and open

Tip: If you're not sure your password still works, sign in first at hubforteams.com (Hub plans) or mail.liberation.email (Email Pro plans) to confirm it before setting up Outlook.

Add the account in Outlook 2016

  1. Open Outlook 2016. Go to File > Add Account.
  2. On the "Auto Account Setup" screen, select Manual setup or additional server types at the bottom, then click Next.
  3. Select POP or IMAP, then click Next.
  4. Fill in the POP and IMAP Account Settings screen:

    User Information

    • Your Name: your name as you want it to appear on outgoing mail
    • Email Address: your full email address

    Server Information

    • Account Type: IMAP
    • Incoming mail server: mail.liberation.email
    • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): mail.liberation.email

    Logon Information

    • User Name: your full email address
    • Password: your mailbox password
    • Check Remember password
  5. Click More Settings…
    • On the Outgoing Server tab, check My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication, and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
    • On the Advanced tab, set the ports and encryption shown in the table below, then click OK.
  6. Click Next. Outlook will test the connection. The incoming/outgoing login tests should succeed — a "Send test e-mail message" failure can happen even when everything else works, so if only that step fails, it's safe to click Close and continue.
  7. Click Finish.
Incoming server (IMAP) Outgoing server (SMTP)
Port 993 465
Encryption SSL/TLS SSL/TLS

If port 993/465 don't connect (some networks block them), go back into Account Settings > More Settings > Advanced and use IMAP port 143 and SMTP port 587, both set to TLS encryption instead of SSL/TLS.

Missing folders after setup

Outlook sometimes only displays "subscribed" IMAP folders, so Sent, Drafts or other folders may not show up right away:

  1. Right-click your account name in the folder pane and choose IMAP Folders…
  2. Click Query, select the folders you want, and click Subscribe.
  3. Uncheck "When displaying hierarchy in Outlook, show only subscribed folders."
  4. Click OK.

Troubleshooting

  • Outlook keeps asking for your password: your password was likely changed elsewhere (Hub or webmail). Update it under File > Account Settings > Account Settings, select the account, click Change, and re-enter the current password.
  • You can receive mail but can't send: double check "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" is checked and set to use the same settings as incoming (step 5 above).
  • Still not working: confirm the password by signing in on the web — Hub plans at hubforteams.com, Email Pro plans at mail.liberation.email. If that also fails, reset your password (see How to log in to Liberation Email / Hub for Teams and reset your password).

Calendar and contacts sync separately from mail and aren't covered by these steps — see How to sync your Hub calendar and contacts to your phone, Outlook or Thunderbird.
