CodeGuard keeps a copy of your website for every day it has backed up. You can put the whole site back the way it was, restore only some files or a database, or download a backup and restore it yourself.

Important: Restoring replaces what's on your website now. If the site was hacked, restoring an old copy can bring the same weakness back. Tell us in a ticket so we can clean the site and close the hole.

Restore website files

  1. Log in to the Client Area and go to Services > My Services.
  2. Click your CodeGuard service. If you ordered it as an add-on, open your hosting service instead and find CodeGuard under its add-ons.
  3. Click Log in to CodeGuard Control Panel. It's under Actions on the left, and under the CodeGuard logo on the page. CodeGuard opens and signs you in automatically, so you don't need a separate password.
  1. Next to your website, open the actions menu and choose Restore (or click the site and open the Restore tab).
  2. Find the date you want to go back to and click Restore Options next to it.
  3. Choose one of these:
    • Automatic Restore puts every file back as it was on that date. CodeGuard backs up the current site first, so you can undo the restore.
    • Selective Restore: tick only the files or folders you need. This is the quickest way to recover a deleted page or image.
    • Download Zip: download the whole backup or selected files to your computer.

A restore can take from a few minutes to about an hour on a large site. You'll get an email listing the files that were restored. If a restore shows the same status (for example "Provisioning a private server") for more than an hour, open a support ticket.

Restore a database

  1. In the CodeGuard dashboard, click the database name (under your website or in the databases list).
  2. Open the Restore tab and click View All Backups.
  3. Choose the date and the restore option, then confirm.
Tip: For WordPress, content such as posts, pages and settings lives in the database, while images, plugins and themes are files. To undo a broken plugin update, restore the files. To get a deleted post back, restore the database.
