"You Have Reached Your Account Limit" When Creating Accounts

Summary: If WHM won't let you create or transfer another cPanel account, your server has most likely reached the account limit for your plan and cPanel license, and this article shows you how to confirm it and free up room.

Why this happens

Each reseller plan includes a set number of cPanel accounts, and the cPanel license on your server matches that number:

When the server reaches that number, WHM stops creating new accounts. This affects Create a New Account, restores, and transfers, and it can also stop billing software like WHMCS from setting up new accounts automatically.

Step 1: Count your accounts

1. Log in to WHM as root.
2. Go to Account Functions » List Accounts.
3. Check the total number of accounts shown. This includes every cPanel account on the server.

Step 2: Look for accounts that still count

Some accounts count toward the limit even though they might not seem "active":

• Suspended accounts: A suspended account still exists on the server, so it still counts. Suspending a client for non-payment doesn't free a slot.
• Test and staging accounts: Old test sites, staging copies, and demo accounts all count.
• Half-finished transfers: If a transfer or restore failed partway, it may have left a partial account behind. Look for accounts you don't recognize.
• Recently terminated accounts: Termination frees the slot once the account is fully removed. If you terminated an account a moment ago and still see the limit, wait a few minutes and try again.

Step 3: Free up a slot

If some accounts are no longer needed:

1. Back up first. In the client's cPanel, download a full account backup from Files » Backup. On Studio and higher, you can also open a ticket if you'll need an older copy from our daily backups later. Those backups are kept for 7 days only.
2. Go to Account Functions » Terminate Accounts.
3. Select the account and confirm the termination. This permanently deletes the account's files, databases, and DNS zone.
4. Try creating the new account again.

Should I combine sites into one account?

One cPanel account can host several domains as addon domains, which uses fewer slots. We generally don't recommend combining different clients in one account. If one site is compromised, the others are exposed too, and billing, backups, and handing a client their own login all get harder. Combining makes sense only for sites that belong to the same client.

Step 4: Upgrade if you've outgrown your plan

If all of your accounts are real, active clients, it's time for a bigger plan:

• Launch to Studio: 5 to 30 accounts, plus daily backups
• Studio to Agency: 30 to 100 accounts, plus cPanel Premier custom branding
• Agency to Agency Plus or Scale: 150 or 250 accounts

• The number of accounts shown in List Accounts
• The exact error message
• Where you saw it: WHM, a transfer, or your billing software

Planning ahead

• If you're planning a migration, check your account count first. We migrate for free up to your plan's account limit, so upgrade before a large move.
• Review suspended accounts every month. Terminate the ones that won't return, after taking a backup.
