An A record points a name to an IPv4 address. It is the record that sends visitors to the server your website is on. The most common A record is on the domain itself (@), so yourdomain.com opens your website.

Your hosting welcome email, or your hosting account's details in the Client Area, shows the IP address to use.

Add or change an A record

Before you start: You can only manage DNS here if your domain uses our nameservers: dns1.liberationtek.com, dns2.liberationtek.com and dns3.liberationtek.com. If the DNS Management page says "This zone is not active", your domain points somewhere else. Either change the nameservers (see Changing your domain's nameservers) or add the record where your DNS is hosted now.
  1. Log in to the Client Area.
  2. Go to Domains > My Domains and click the domain.
  3. In the menu on the left, click DNS Management.
  1. In the top row, enter the Hostname: @ for yourdomain.com, or a prefix such as shop for shop.yourdomain.com.
  2. Leave TTL at 3600 (one hour) unless you have a reason to change it.
  3. Choose A in the Type list.
  4. Enter the Address: the server’s IP address, for example 203.0.113.10.
  5. Click Add Record. The record is added to the list as a pending change.
  6. Click Save Changes at the bottom. Nothing changes until you save.

Already have an A record on the same hostname? Change its Address in the list instead of adding a second one, unless you mean to split visitors between two servers.

Tip: Want www.yourdomain.com to work too? Add a CNAME record with Hostname www pointing to your domain. See CNAME records.

How long does it take?

Most changes work within an hour. Some networks keep the old record until its TTL runs out, so allow up to 24–48 hours before assuming something is wrong.
